A butterfly valve uses a circular disc mounted on a rotating shaft. In the open position the disc is parallel to flow, offering minimal restriction. Rotating the disc 90 degrees closes it across the pipe bore, sealing against a resilient liner or metal seat.
Concentric designs are cost-effective for water and general service. Double-offset (high-performance) designs reduce seat wear and improve shutoff. Triple-offset designs provide metal-seated, zero-leakage shutoff for oil, gas, and high-temperature service. Wafer design installs between flanges; lug design allows one-sided pipe removal without disturbing the other side.
