A check valve opens automatically under forward flow pressure and closes when flow stops or reverses. The closing mechanism varies by type: swing check uses a hinged disc, lift check uses a vertically lifting plug, dual-plate wafer uses spring-loaded split disc halves, and ball check uses a free-rolling ball.
Spring-assisted designs close faster to prevent water hammer. The correct type must be selected based on installation orientation, flow velocity, and media characteristics.
