A gate valve uses a flat or wedge-shaped gate that slides perpendicular to flow. When fully retracted into the bonnet, the flow path is completely clear — giving the same internal bore as the pipe with no restriction. When lowered, the gate seats against matching faces in the body.
Gate valves are multi-turn devices requiring many handwheel turns from open to closed. OS&Y (outside screw and yoke) designs provide visual stem position indication. Non-rising stem designs are used where headroom is limited or for buried installations.
