A globe valve uses a disc or plug that moves linearly into or away from a circular seat. The disc position is controlled by rotating the handwheel, which moves the rising stem. This linear motion over a circular seat aperture gives the globe valve its characteristically fine, controllable throttling behaviour compared to quarter-turn valves.
Balanced disc designs reduce the actuator thrust required for high pressure-drop applications.
