A solenoid valve uses an electromagnetic coil to pull or push a ferromagnetic core (plunger), which directly operates the valve orifice (direct-acting) or controls a pilot orifice that in turn operates the main valve (pilot-operated). When the coil is energised, the plunger moves to open or close flow.
Normally closed valves are de-energised closed, energised open. Normally open valves are the reverse. Bistable (latching) solenoids hold their last position without continuous power.
