A gasket is installed between two flange faces and compressed under bolt load to fill surface imperfections and create a pressure-tight seal. The correct gasket type must match the flange facing (raised face, flat face, ring type joint), the pressure class, operating temperature, and chemical compatibility with the process media. Spiral wound gaskets combine a metallic winding with a soft filler for resilient sealing. RTJ gaskets use a precision-machined metal ring that cold-flows into the groove under bolt load to provide a metal-to-metal seal.

A diaphragm seal consists of a flexible membrane that separates the instrument from the process fluid. The space between the diaphragm and the instrument is filled with a fill fluid (glycerine, silicone oil, or food-grade oil). When process pressure acts on the diaphragm, it transmits that pressure through the fill fluid to the instrument without process fluid entering the instrument body — protecting instruments from corrosive, viscous, crystallising, or very high-temperature media.
